
A. TIME LIMIT: 4 Seconds for Qualified Ride.
Calf riding will be scored first within the time limit (buzzer) and the judge’s score, secondly by the stopwatch with a minimum of one (1) second. Each judge to score 1-25 points on the stock, and 1-25 points on the contestant for a total of 100 possible points.
B. Riding will be done with one or two hands, with overlapped rope or steer rope with bell. If the ride is started with one hand, it must be finished with the same one hand to be considered a qualified ride. If the ride is started with two hands, it must be finished with two hands to be considered a qualified ride. Contestant shall furnish own equipment including bull rope and bell.
C. When calf is ready Contestant will have two (2) minutes to nod.
1. No knots or hitches to prevent rope from falling off steer when contestant leaves animal are permitted.
2. Ropes must have bell: NO BELL-NO SCORE.
3. Ropes with knots. Wires or other devices used for the purpose of placing spurs therein will be considered illegal equipment.
4. Only approved adhesive material may be used on rope and glove.
5. Contestants are permitted to use bubble wraps only. Judges will have the authority to disallow dangerous wrap.
6. Rowels must have at least ¼" of a turn movement.
7. Judges have the right to approve or disapprove ropes and equipment.
D. Time begins when steer's inside shoulder crosses the plane of the chute.
E. The judge on the latch side of the chute gate shall serve as a back-up timer in the calf riding event. The judge’s stopwatch reading shall be used as a means of verification when the length of the qualified ride is in question. The judge shall stop his watch when, in his opinion, the contestant has been disqualified for any reason, or when he hears the whistle or horn, whichever comes first. In either instance, the judge will refer to his watch for time verification on each ride. In any instance where the time is 4 seconds or more on the judge’s watch, the contestant shall be entitled to a marking without penalty. In the instance the whistle blows before the 4 seconds, the judge must go with the whistle.
F. Contestant will be disqualified for any of the following:
1. Not being ready when called.
2. Being bucked off before allotted time.
3. Touching any part of the animal, equipment, or person with the free hand.
4. Using sharpened rowel or rowels with no movement.
5. Using rope with no bell.
6. Losing hold of rope.
G. If a contestant feels he/she is entitled to a re-ride, the contestant must go to the Arena Director and request a re-ride before the event is over.
1. The matter of the re-rides shall be decided by the Judges.
2. If the re-ride is given, the Judge shall inform the contestant immediately of his marking and an option of a re-ride.
3. Contestant may refuse re-ride and take his marking.
4. Contestant must make his decision immediately.
H. The K-1-2 contestant has the option of selecting mutton busting or calf riding – cannot compete in both. Once a contestant moves on to calf riding, he/she cannot compete in mutton busting. The only exception is for the state finals for a contestant who qualifies in both events – within the 4-event limit. MANDATORY: Contestant must wear safety-approved vest and mouthpiece.
I. Covered 4 second rides only will receive scores and no points for rides less then 4 seconds.
